Stop on Red Week 2025
Red Light Running Deaths Are Preventable
The Deadly Cost of Red Light Running
Running red lights is a dangerous and all-too-common behavior. According to The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), in 2023 alone, 1,086 people lost their lives in crashes caused by red light violations. Tragically, about half of those killed were innocent bystanders—pedestrians, cyclists, and occupants of other vehicles struck by the red light runners.
A Proven Solution: Red Light Safety Cameras
Red light safety cameras have been shown to effectively deter drivers from running red lights. While police enforcement is the gold standard for encouraging compliance with traffic laws, it’s simply not feasible for officers to monitor every intersection. Cameras help bridge that gap.
According to a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), these cameras led to a 21% drop in fatal red light running crashes in large cities. They also contributed to a 14% reduction in all types of fatal crashes at signalized intersections.
Addressing Privacy Concerns
Some worry about privacy, but red light cameras don’t infringe on personal rights. Driving is a regulated public activity, and by holding a license, drivers agree to follow traffic laws. Cameras simply hold rule-breakers accountable—just like a police officer would.
Smarter Signals, Safer Streets
Improving traffic signal timing also plays a key role in safety. Giving drivers adequate yellow light time has been shown to reduce red light running and decrease crash rates.
