Statistically, one in ten (10%) pedestrians will die in a collision when hit by a car driving 20 mph. While at 30 mph there is a 50% chance of the pedestrian dying and the chances of dying at 40 mph increases to 90%. What is an acceptable survival rate for children in your community?
The risk to pedestrians increases dramatically as speed increases.
We’ve conducted school zone speed studies throughout the United States. Our studies showed that, depending on the location, between 40% – 95% of all passing vehicles were exceeding the speed limit. Of those, between 10% – 80% were driving more than 5mph above the speed limit and up to 28% were driving at more than 10 mph above the speed limit.
THE SOLUTION: ENFORCE WITH SPEED DETECTION CAMERAS
In states where allowed, communities have started or continue to install school zone speed detection cameras to educate drivers and enforce school zone safety laws. In many states, the law lets speed cameras be used to ticket drivers in school zones as long as drivers are 10 mph over the speed limit while school zone lights are flashing. Drivers can technically be ticketed by an officer for only going 1 mph over the speed limit, so the cameras are more lenient.
