Plan Ahead to Drive Safely Home

Like many festive times of year, the winter holidays see a troubling rise in alcohol-impaired driving and the tragic crashes that result. NovoaGlobal automated enforcement cameras help communities deter dangerous driving behaviors by monitoring traffic violations such as speeding and red-light running.

Between December 2019 and December 2023, 4,931 people lost their lives in traffic crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver. In December 2023 alone, there were 1,038 such fatalities—697 of them involving drivers with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .15 g/dL or higher, nearly twice the legal limit in almost every state.

These numbers are a sobering reminder that safety should be a top priority during the holiday season. If you plan to drink, plan ahead. Don’t wait until after you’ve been drinking to decide how you’ll get home—alcohol impairs judgment and decision-making. Arrange for a designated sober driver, or plan to use a taxi or rideshare service for a safe ride. If you realize you’re not able to drive, hand your keys to a sober friend and let them help you get home safely.

Friends also play a critical role in preventing impaired driving. If someone you know has been drinking and is thinking about driving, speak up. Take the keys if necessary and help them find a sober ride home. If you see a suspected drunk driver on the road, contact local law enforcement immediately.

In addition to personal responsibility, technology can play an important role in improving roadway safety. NovoaGlobal automated enforcement cameras help communities deter dangerous driving behaviors by monitoring traffic violations such as speeding and red-light running—common factors in serious and fatal crashes. By providing consistent, around-the-clock enforcement, these systems encourage safer driving habits, support law enforcement efforts, and help create safer roads during high-risk periods like the winter holidays and throughout the year.

Everyone has a role to play in preventing impaired driving—through smart planning, looking out for one another, and supporting proven safety solutions. For more information on impaired driving and how to prevent it, visit nhtsa.gov/risky-driving/drunk-driving.
