Halloween Drive Safely
Watch for Pedestrians
According to Consumer Reports, Halloween has been one of the deadliest days of the year for pedestrians, especially children.
“Driving at night is three times as risky as driving during the day,” says Matthew Brumbelow, a senior research engineer at the IIHS. The holiday should serve as a reminder to motorists and pedestrians alike about the dangers of roadway travel.
The latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that 7,522 pedestrians were killed in 2022—and more than 67,000 pedestrians were injured nationwide—an 11 percent increase from the year before.
Tips for Parents and Drivers:
- Be especially vigilant between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. when children are out trick-or-treating.
- Parents should dress kids in bright costumes and accompany them during their outings.
- Drivers should reduce speed in residential areas, and communities may consider closing streets to traffic.
- Watch for young trick-or-treaters in unexpected places. Children may be unaware of traffic and dart into the street unexpectedly.
- If you see an impaired driver, contact law enforcement.
